The Smith Meter Petro-gard Valve is a Smith Meter 200 Series valve fitted with a Model 23PG three-way pilot. It is used in off-loading measurement systems together with an air eliminator that carries a special Petro-gard air release head. When the head exhausts air, the air pressure signal shifts the 23PG pilot and the main valve closes, stopping flow so air is not metered; when venting stops, the pilot bleeds off through a small orifice in the head and the valve re-opens slowly. The ideal tuning is fast-closing and slow-opening, set with the opening-speed needle valve. Applications include truck, rail car, barge and tanker unloading.
Key specifications
- Construction: Smith Meter 200 Series main valve with Model 23PG spring-loaded, diaphragm-operated three-way pilot

- Sizes / weight: 2" (42 lb), 3" (79 lb), 4" (132 lb), 6" (254 lb)
- Flanges: Class 150 or Class 300 (face-to-face A: 8.0/8.5" for 2", 11.0/11.8" for 3", 13.5/14.1" for 4", 17.0/17.9" for 6")
- Valve materials: Cast steel housing; bronze, stainless steel, ductile iron and carbon steel internals (no-bronze option); LS (low swell) Buna standard, Buna-N or Viton seals
- Pilot materials: Steel housing, stainless steel internals, Viton seals
- Typical arrangements shown: #200-23PG for kerosene, gasoline and No. 2 fuel oil; #202-23PG-09Y/03A-03A for No. 6 fuel oil (2,000 SSU max.); #202-23PG-03A for light crude oil (special still well in the air eliminator)
- Vent: 3/8" vent from the Petro-gard air release head, piped to a safe point of discharge at atmospheric pressure
How to specify / order
The bulletin has no position-by-position model code. To quote, send:
- Valve size (2", 3", 4" or 6") and flange class (150 or 300)
- Product (for example gasoline / kerosene / No. 2 fuel oil, No. 6 fuel oil, or light crude) so the matching arrangement (200-23PG, 202-23PG-09Y/03A-03A or 202-23PG-03A) can be confirmed
- Seal material (LS Buna, Buna-N or Viton) and whether a no-bronze build is needed
- The air eliminator model the valve will work with; it must carry a Petro-gard air release head (crude service needs a special still well; consult factory for size)
Bulletin notes: no model code or part numbers are given; the arrangements above are the typical valve numbers shown in the bulletin's figures. Pressure drop is given only as a chart.
Pricing and lead time are quoted per configuration. Send the model code (or the details above) with your product and operating conditions to Flow Measurement Services for a quote. Specifications summarized from Smith Meter bulletin SS03003 Rev 0.4 (8/17); confirm current data with the factory before ordering.
