The Smith Meter Viscosity Sensing Unit (VSU) is a compact skid that packages an on-line viscometer for multi-product turbine meter stations. It supplies live viscosity to the Smith Meter UPCC compensators on MV Series helical turbine meters, so meter factors track product changes without manual entry. The skid uses a Solartron 7827 viscometer head in a flow-through chamber fed by a variable-speed positive displacement pump, with a remote 7950 (or 7951) signal converter and VSU interface software running on a customer PC.

Key specifications

  • Viscosity range: To over 1,000 cSt; flow-through chamber removes viscous shear effects for viscous crude oils
  • Flow control: Positive displacement pump with variable frequency drive (ACS355 controller) for controlled chamber velocity
  • Connections: 2" ASME Class 150 or Class 300 flanged inlet and outlet with block valves; vent and drain to safe area
  • Footprint: Approx. 54" x 60" (Class 150 skid); see bulletin drawings for Class 300
  • Electronics: Solartron 7827 viscometer head on skid; 7950 wall-mount or 7951 panel-mount signal converter in control room
  • Communications: 7-conductor shielded twisted pair skid to converter; EIA-232/485 converter to PC; EIA-485 Modbus RTU PC to up to 16 UPCCs
  • Software: VSU interface software (Windows PC supplied by end user) polls the converter and writes viscosity to each UPCC
  • Installation: On the main header so the reading applies to every meter; level, solid foundation

How to specify / order

  • Number of MV Series turbine meters / UPCCs to be served and their communication addresses
  • Products handled and viscosity range (cSt) at operating temperatures
  • Header pressure class: ASME 150 or ASME 300 skid
  • Signal converter style: 7950 wall-mount or 7951 panel-mount
  • Motor/VFD supply voltage and area classification
  • PC and serial port arrangement (dedicated port for the converter recommended)

The SS02020 bulletin has no position-by-position model code; FMS quotes the VSU as an engineered skid from the details above.

Pricing and lead time are quoted per configuration. Send the model code (or your application details), product, flow range, and pressure/temperature to Flow Measurement Services for a quote. Specifications summarized from Smith Meter bulletin SS02020; confirm current data with the factory before ordering.
