The Smith Meter Bidirectional Prover is a displacement-type proving device, either stationary or portable (truck-mounted), used to determine the meter factor of positive displacement and turbine meters at loading racks, pipelines and marine terminals. A spheroid travels through a water-draw calibrated section in both directions, reversed by a four-way diverter valve, and the meter pulses counted between two detector switches over one round trip are compared to the certified volume. Double diverter-valve seals with seal monitoring give bubble-tight sealing during proving.

Key specifications

  • Connections: 2 through 24 in, ANSI Class 150 through 900 flanged
  • Max working pressure: To 2,220 psi (15,307 kPa) at 100 °F
  • Temperature: -20 to 200 °F standard; others on request
  • Calibrated volume: Water-draw calibrated, traceable to NIST; certified within 0.02%
  • Configurations: Single-loop, high-capacity, underground, and portable truck-mounted versions
  • Standard equipment: Four-way valve with electric actuator (local/remote) and seal-indicating device, two high-resolution detector switches, sphere, pressure gauges, thermometers in SS wells, vents, thermal relief valve, drains
  • Compliance: ANSI B31.4 and B31.3 piping; API MPMS Chapters 4, 5 and 12; explosion-proof (NEMA 7/9) electrical for Class I Group D areas
  • Products: LPG, gasolines, crude oils and other liquid petroleum

How to specify / order

Smith provers are engineered to order; the bulletin gives specifications and standard equipment rather than a position-by-position model code. Provide the following with your RFQ:

  • Line size and flange class: 2-24 in; ANSI 150, 300, 600 or 900
  • Meter(s) to be proved: Type, size and K-factor of PD or turbine meters
  • Flow range: Minimum / normal / maximum flow
  • Product: Name, gravity, viscosity, temperature and pressure range
  • Installation: Stationary above-ground, underground, or portable truck-mounted
  • Controls: Local and/or remote diverter-valve control; prover counter or flow computer interface
  • Certification: Water-draw calibration; pressure code (ASME B31.3 / B31.4)

Pricing and lead time are quoted per configuration. Send the model code (or your application details), product, flow range, and pressure/temperature to Flow Measurement Services for a quote. Specifications summarized from Smith Meter bulletin SS0V002; confirm current data with the factory before ordering.
