The Smith Meter Proximity Card Reader is an RF-based proximity reader with a microprocessor that interprets multiple card formats and sends the card data to the AccuLoad or directly to a terminal automation system, to identify drivers and users. It can be used as a gate reader or an island reader. The N4 version mounts to the front of an AccuLoad N4 or Split Architecture MMI for Division 2 areas; the XP version is for Division 1 hazardous locations. LED (red, green, yellow), buzzer and relay can all be controlled remotely by the automation system, and card authorization stays valid until a programmable timeout (1-99 minutes) expires.

Key specifications

  • Power: 24 Vdc at 35 mA or 12 Vdc at 70 mA
  • DC output: Optically isolated solid-state output, user-programmable function and polarity (power-down normally open); 30 Vdc max blocking; 150 mA max load with 0.9 V drop
  • Card interface: 125 kHz excitation; typical read range up to 2 in (5.08 cm) of glass, depending on installation
  • Communications: EIA-485 four- or two-wire multi-drop or EIA-232 three-wire; 2,400-19,200 bps; 1 start, 8 data, 1 stop, no parity; Smith Meter ASCII LRC protocol; up to 8 devices per EIA-232 line, up to 16 per EIA-485 line
  • Reader environment: -40 to 140 °F (-40 to 60 °C), 0-95% RH non-condensing
  • XP reader approvals: UL/cUL Class I, Div 1, Groups C & D; Class II, Groups E, F, G; Enclosure 4X / 4, IP66; Class I, Zone 1, AEx d IIB T6; ATEX Ex d IIB T6 Gb (DEMKO 03 ATEX 0252381); IECEx Ex d IIB T6 Gb (IECEx UL 14.0046); Tamb -40 to +60 °C
  • N4 reader approvals: UL/cUL Class I, Division 2, Groups C & D; Class I, Zone 2, Group IIB; Enclosure 4X / 4
  • Proximity cards: HID-compatible, about 2.1 x 3.4 in, 0.24 oz, five-digit ID number, -40 to 160 °F; intrinsically safe for Class I Div 1 Groups C & D, Class II E/F/G, Ex ib IIB T6 Gb (ATEX and IECEx); custom artwork on one side optional; approved hazardous-location cards only from the factory

How to read the model code

Example: PCR-N4 (reader) and PC-IS-STD (card). Read the code left to right; each position selects one option:

  • PCR (Model designation): Proximity Card Reader
  • N4 / XP (Housing): N4 = UL/cUL (Division 2); XP = UL/cUL, ATEX and IECEx (Division 1)
  • PC (Model designation (card)): Proximity Card
  • IS (Card approval): IS = intrinsically safe
  • STD / CF (Card printing): STD = blank; CF = custom artwork

How to specify / order

Give the reader and card codes above, or send:

  • Reader housing: N4 (mounts on an AccuLoad N4 or Split Architecture MMI, Division 2) or XP (Division 1, ATEX / IECEx)
  • What it reports to: AccuLoad or the automation system, EIA-232 or EIA-485, and the number of devices on the line
  • Quantity of intrinsically safe cards and whether custom artwork is wanted
  • Supply voltage available (12 or 24 Vdc)

Bulletin notes: EMC compliance is printed as "European Community Electromagnetic Capabilities" (Compatibility); the card and the XP reader list the same ATEX (DEMKO 03 ATEX 0252381) and IECEx (IECEx UL 14.0046) certificate numbers - confirm which certificate covers which item with the factory; the N4 reader approval gives no ambient temperature range; up to 8 devices on an EIA-232 line is unusual for a point-to-point standard. Rev 0.6 removed the key fob. A Spanish edition (SS06044sn) also exists. The FUEL-FACS+ DET (listing SM-FUELFACS-DET) refers to this bulletin for its Ex d card reader.

Pricing and lead time are quoted per configuration. Send the model code (or the details above) with your product and operating conditions to Flow Measurement Services for a quote. Specifications summarized from Smith Meter bulletin SS06044 Rev 0.6 (9/17); confirm current data with the factory before ordering.
