The Smith Meter G-Type Calibrator is used where a PD meter must operate in either direction: normal flow increases counter registration and reverse flow decreases it. Gear ratios can be changed to correct for operating conditions or product viscosity. Adjustment is made through an access cover below the counter, which exposes a coarse (right-hand) and a fine (left-hand) notched shifter bar and a knurled knob for turning the gears into mesh. After adjustment the cover is sealed against tampering.

Coarse adjustment: Right-hand shifter: each notch = 6/10 of 1% (printed as 138.8 cu in per 100 gal)
Fine adjustment: Left-hand shifter: each notch = 1/20 of 1% (11.5 cu in per 100 gal)
Direction: Pull shifters out to slow the counter (prover level rises); push in to speed it up (prover level falls)
Lubrication: Light coat of SAE 10 or lighter oil; gears have a self-lubricating electro-film coating
