The Smith Meter Universal Pulse Transmitter (UPT) is an infrared, quad-channel, high-resolution pulse generator driven by the output shaft of a PD meter for custody transfer. It provides dual quadrature outputs (A and B, about 90 electrical degrees apart) for pulse-integrity checking and flow-direction sensing, complementary outputs (A-bar and B-bar) that go to 0 V on loss of power, and a once-per-revolution verification pulse for independent checking of transmission. An infrared emitter and receiver array with an ASIC board track the pulses as the emitter ages; pulse trains are compatible with all Smith Meter electronics.

Key specifications

  • Input power: +12 to +24 VDC; 50 mA typical at 12 or 24 VDC; 150 mA typical at 24 VDC into 820 Ω
  • Pulse outputs: Push-pull driver, 20 mA per channel max.; source = input minus 2 V max.; sink to within 0.5 V of common; duty 50/50 nominal (60/40 with temperature)
  • Phasing: A / A-bar and B / B-bar 180° (±0.1%); A to B 90 ±40 electrical degrees; verification pulse on the leading edge of A
  • Verification pulse: 1 per input revolution; width ≥ 47 ms at 300 rpm
  • Speed / torque: 0-300 rpm; 14 in-oz typical
  • Temperature: -40 to 158 °F (-40 to 70 °C)
  • Approvals: UL/CUL Class I, Div. 1, Groups C and D; Class II, Groups E, F, G; Class I, Zone 1, Exd IIB, IP65 (file E23545). ATEX and IECEx Ex db IIB Gb T6, IP65 (IECEx UL 04.0009X)
  • Transmission distance: Up to 2,000 ft (610 m), multi-conductor insulated shielded cable
  • Weight / conduit: 15.5 lb; 0.750-14 NPT conduit

How to read the model code

Example: UPT-XU-1000-STD-01. Read the code left to right; each position selects one option:

  • UPT (Type): Universal Pulse Transmitter
  • XU (Housing): Explosion-proof, UL/CUL, ATEX and IECEx
  • Resolution (Pulses per input-shaft revolution): 1000, 500, 250, 200 or 100
  • STD (Trim package): Standard
  • Input coupling (Mates with meter output): 00 = S1 (E3 through H8, E3-S3, S5); 01 = S3 and S5 (C2, F4 through H8); 02 = S6 and S7 (C2 through M16); 03 = S1, S3 and S5 (JA/JB10, K12, M16); 04 = C2-S1 and SC-13 gallons; 05 = C2-S1 and SC-13 dekalitres; 06 = SD meters and T-40 gallons; 07 = SD meters and T-40 dekalitres

Ordering information

Select the model that gives the pulses per unit volume needed for the meter gearing:

  • Pulses per volume (100% gearing): UPT-1000 / 500 / 250 / 200 / 100 give 1,000 / 500 / 250 / 200 / 100 pulses per gallon, barrel or dekalitre on 1:1 gearing; one-fifth of that on 5:1 gallon gearing; 5:1 dekalitre gearing only on UPT-1000 / 500 / 250 (200 / 100 / 50); 10:1 dekalitre only on UPT-1000 / 500 (100 / 50)
  • F4-S1: coupling 00 for meters built before 2008, coupling 01 for 2008 and later
  • Input coupling part numbers by meter (Chart A): 014356-002, 003821-002 or 005969-002; input gears for SC-13, T-11/I-75, T-20/I-150, T-40/SD series as listed in the bulletin
  • Meters with a manual calibrator: use UPT adaptor kit 529288-011 instead of a coupling
  • For runs over 2,000 ft, give instrument type, coupling, maximum output frequency and distance

Bulletin notes: footnotes jump from 1 to 4 (no 2 or 3); the coupling codes (00-07) in the model code are not cross-referenced to the coupling part numbers in Chart A; footnote 9 cites parts list "P001006" (likely PO01006). Confirm the coupling with the factory using the meter serial number.

Pricing and lead time are quoted per configuration. Send the model number (or the details above) with your meter model and serial number to Flow Measurement Services for a quote. Specifications summarized from Smith Meter bulletin SS01105 Rev 0.8 (1/18); confirm current data with the factory before ordering.
